Kournikova Loses Bid for 1st Title

SHANGHAI, China, Sept. 16 (AP) -- Anna Kournikova is still seeking her first WTA singles title. Anna Smashnova dashed Kournikova's hopes with a 6-2, 6-3 victory in the final of the Shanghai Open on Sunday. The 21-year-old Russian, better known for her glamour and lucrative commercial endorsements, has lost all four finals she has played in her career. "I am quite disappointed. She played her game, and I didn't play the right way," Kournikova said. "I tried to mix it up. I should have been more aggressive, gone to the net more." Kournikova was slowed by unforced errors, repeatedly hitting balls too long from the baseline and missing key shots at the net.. In the second game, Kournikova argued calls and was visibly angry.

Game, Set and Match to 'Sexiest Woman'

LONDON, May 24, 2002 (Reuters) - Anna Kournikova, the Russian tennis player as renowned for her glamorous image as her ground strokes, has finally won a title -- the sexiest woman in the world.

Despite having never won a singles title the Russian, who in 2000 earned an estimated $29,080 a day, came out on top of British men's magazine FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World 2002 poll published on Friday.

Kournikova, who is no longer in the top 50 of the tennis rankings, beat off competition from British group S Club 7 member Rachel Stevens, American pop star Britney Spears and two-time winner of the poll, actress and singer Jennifer Lopez. "Anna has always been a hot contender for the top and her of-court activities have boosted her popularity," said FHM editor David Davies in a statement.

Of the Russian's 7.5 million pound earnings in 2000, 6.55 million pounds came from sponsorships and endorsements, which helps to explain why Kournikova -- who was 34th in the 2001 contest -- polled most of the five million votes cast around the world. Pop stars figured prominently in the poll, with six out of ten women singers in the top 10, while the FHM top 100 also featured a record number of pregnant women, with British topless model Jordan ranked highest at 16.

Bad Nudes for Penthouse

NEW YORK, May 7, 2002 (FOXNEWS) -- Years of moral outrage and attacks by angry feminists couldn't kill Penthouse -- but the wife of a Benetton heir suing because the porno mag bared her breasts to the world now threatens to shut it down for good.

The magazine earlier this month published topless photos of a woman it claimed was tennis superstar Anna Kournikova. Kournikova vehemently denied it, and yesterday Judith Soltesz-Benetton filed suit in Manhattan federal court, saying the photos are 7-year-old unauthorized shots of her.

The Porn-ikova scandal -- and Soltesz-Benetton's $10 million lawsuit -- may be enough to strip the struggling Penthouse of its last remaining assets, sources said. "[Publisher Bob Guccione] already has quite a considerable debt load," said a source. "To have this on top of it, I can't say it would be catastrophic, but it's very significant." Soltesz-Benetton also wants Penthouse to recall all unsold issues of the magazine -- which would cost the company millions more. His company, General Media Communications, took another hit yesterday when Manhattan federal Judge Denny Chin ruled the titillating photos were "clearly not" Kournikova.
